Welcome to Year 1!
We have a fantastic class in Year 1!
There are 28 hard working and helpful pupils.
The Year 1 staff are Miss Lorraine, Mrs Hornsby and Mrs Curtis. Mrs Reilly also works in Year 1 on Thursday afternoons.
PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure that your child has their full PE kit in school. They will bring it home at the end of each half term.
What we are learning about…
Autumn Term
Every morning the children have Read Write Inc where they learn a whole range of sounds. They then use their skills to decode unfamiliar words which help with reading and writing.
In maths we are learning to recognise numbers to 100, counting forwards and backwards from any given number. We will use concrete resources and pictorial methods to help us understand tricky mathematical concepts across the year.
We will also be learning how to keep ourselves happy and healthy in science, the meaning behind Bonfire night in history and our local area in geography. The children will be developing their enquiring skills
Spring Term
The children are continuing to work well in Read, Write, Inc on a morning. Lots of them know every sound now which is helping them read much harder words. We are now practising lots so that we can become faster readers.
In maths we have been looking at ordinal numbers. The children have been very enthusiastic to be first rather than last! We are currently looking at numbers to 20, their place value and their spellings! We are using lots of concrete apparatus to help us visualise the numbers.
In science this half term we are looking at mini worlds. The children are enjoying looking through magnifying glasses and microscopes to see the shapes and patterns on objects. We have looked at a range of different materials including wood, metal, plastic and parts of our body.
In geography we are looking at ‘Our Locality’ which includes looking at Seaham and the surrounding areas in depth. We have been learning to write and send letters, finding out our own address.
In PE we are learning to be gymnasts. We are learning to walk like gymnasts and learning how to roll in
different ways. The children particularly like the teddy bear roll!
