Archived Y1 Mrs Brotchie (2019/20)

Welcome to Year 1

We have 25 children in our class and our teacher is Mrs Brotchie. Mrs Curtis and Mrs Reilly work with us too. It’s very busy in Year 1.

Mrs Reilly teaches us on a Thursday afternoon. This term she will be teaching us Geography and RE.

PE

Our PE days are on a Monday and Friday so please make sure your children bring their PE kit and a bottle of water.  Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school on those days clearly named to save any confusion. Their PE kit is to stay in school and they will bring it home at the end of each half term. We also do the daily mile at 11:45 every day. We like to keep fit and healthy! Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school each day. Thank you

Home Reading

Please listen to your child read every night. If your child has finished their book and is confident with reading it, it would be helpful if you could spend some time asking your child questions about it. Please sign their reading record each night so we know your child has read.

Times Tables

It is also very important that your child knows their times tables as they help with almost every area of maths. They can practice at home on Times Table Rockstars.

Spellings

The children will be given spellings on a Monday and we will complete a spelling test on a Friday. Even though we complete lots of spelling activities during the week, the children are still encouraged to practise their spellings when they are at home.

Year 1 – What We Are Learning About

During our first week, we read the story “Giraffes can’t Dance”. We wrote poems about dancing and letters from Cricket.

Every week this term, we will be reading a book and working on specific vocabulary from it. In writing sessions we will be retelling the story.

In maths this term, we will be working on the reading, writing, ordering and place value of numbers to 20, and addition and subtraction within 20. We will also be studying pattern and shape.

During this Autumn term, we will also be learning about:

  • The body and our five senses in Science
  • Our school and simple plans and maps in Geography
  • Our own history, and childhood within living memory in History
  • Programming Beebots (linked to Geography), digital video and using the internet safely in Computing
  • The primary colours and Sarah Bagshaw and Vincent Van Gogh in Art
  • Sliders and levers in Design Technology
  • Christian churches and worship in RE
  • Gymnastic shapes and balancing, and Rollerball team games in PE
