Archived Y2 Miss Armstrong (2019/20)

Welcome to Year 2

There are 27 wonderful pupils in our class. The staff working in Year 2 are Miss Armstrong, Miss Devlin, Miss Bird and Mrs Curtis. Mrs Reilly teaches the children on a Tuesday afternoon.

PE

Our P.E. days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child has a full P.E. kit in school on these days.  Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school on those days clearly named to save any confusion. Their PE kit is to stay in school and they will bring it home at the end of each half term.

Home Reading

In school children will read with an adult at least 3 times a week. Please make sure that children have their reading books in school every day. Children should read their books every night at home and we encourage you to sign their reading record every time they do

Times Tables

It is also very important that your child knows their times tables  as they help with almost every area of maths. They can practice at home on Times Table Rockstars.

Spellings

The children will be given spellings on a Monday and we will complete a spelling test on a Friday. Even though we complete lots of spelling activities during the week, the children are still encouraged to practise their spellings when they are at home.

Year 2 – What We Are Learning About

Year 2 loved reading Man on the Moon (a day in the life of Bob). They were very excited about the setting in space and thoroughly enjoyed learning more about what Bob did on the moon. Year 2 were able to design their own alien and write a short description about them. We had some very creative ideas! Then they planned what they would do if they spent the day with them and wrote a short diary entry about it. We decided to make our own planets and spaceships to hang up in our classroom.

Throughout the year, the children will be enjoying a varied curriculum. They will be working from a variety of novels and texts in English. In Numeracy, the children will complete lots of work in topics such as place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions. They will cover all areas using images and concrete materials to help understand difficult concepts. In the afternoon we will look at lots of different interesting topics including the Great Fire of London, oceans and continents, churches and keeping ourselves healthy. We will also be using a variety of musical instruments and lots of different materials in art and design & technology.

In RE we have been learning all about churches. We had a baptism in school – Mrs Colman brought her baby in for the ceremony!

In science we have been learning about our senses. So far, we have done a smell test and a taste test.

We love our PE lessons. Our favourite topic this half term has been piggy in the middle!

We have been really enjoying the Great Fire of London in history. We have learnt a lot about life in 1666 so far. We can’t wait to learn more this term!

We have been using lots of different equipment to support our learning in maths.
