Welcome to Year 3/4
In year 3/4 we have 27 children made of up 13 boys and 14 girls. Mrs Johnson is our class teacher but we also have Miss Burgess working with us most mornings. Miss Burgess also works with us on a Thursday afternoon.
PE
We have PE on a Wednesday afternoon and a Friday morning. Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school on those days clearly named to save any confusion. We also take part in the daily mile just before lunch time where the children are encouraged to run at a steady pace for the given time. Could you please make sure that your children come to school with a water bottle each day.
Home Reading
The children should choose their home reading book once a week. Please can you listen to your child read for at least 10 minutes every day and sign their yellow reading record.
Times Tables
It is also very important that your child knows their times tables (multiplication and division facts to 12 x 12) as they help with almost every area of maths. They can practice at home on Times Table Rockstars or you can challenge them by asking them out of order.
In June 2020, if your child is in year 4, they will be required to complete a multiplication tables check.
Spellings
The children will be given spellings on a Monday and we will complete a spelling test on a Friday. Even though we complete lots of spelling activities during the week, the children are still encouraged to practise their spellings when they are at home.
For the first couple of weeks back, we are studying the book Hansel and Gretel by Anthony Browne.
The children are really enjoying reading this story as it is a story that lots of them are familiar with. It is quite a thought provoking book that allows the children to explore different thoughts and feelings of the characters. The book creates a whole range of learning opportunities covering a range of subjects. We have already written some setting descriptions, we have acted out the story and we have done some fantastic art work using pencil shading to show light and shadow. We will also be writing some character descriptions, completing some computing work based on algorithms and completing some map work.
Throughout the year the children will be working very hard across the whole curriculum. We are already up and running with lots of our subjects. In maths we have been looking at place value – thinking about numbers with hundreds, tens and ones. The children have enjoyed using the equipment to make numbers up to 1000. Throughout the year in English, the children will be working from a variety of novels, poetry and non fiction texts. Topics on an afternoon in the Autumn term include the ‘Stone Age’ in history, ‘Discovering the UK’ in geography and ‘What’s that sound?’ in science.
