Archived Y4/5 Miss Johnston (2019/20)

Welcome to Year 4/5

There are 29 children in year 4/5 with Miss Johnston and Miss Huntingdon. Mrs Burgess works with our class on Tuesday afternoon.

PE

We have PE on Monday morning and Friday afternoon so can you please ensure all children have full PE kit on those days. On a Friday during the Autumn Term, we go swimming to Seaview Primary School.

Home Reading

The children should choose their home reading book once a week.  Please can you listen to your child read for at least 10 minutes every day and sign their yellow reading record.

Times Tables

It is also very important that your child knows their times tables (multiplication and division facts to 12 x 12) as they help with almost every area of maths. They can practice at home on Times Table Rockstars or you can challenge them by asking them out of order.

In June 2020, if your child is in year 4, they will be required to complete a multiplication tables check.

Spellings

The children will be given spellings once a week and we will complete a spelling test on a Friday. Even though we complete lots of spelling activities during the week, the children are still encouraged to practise their spellings when they are at home.

Year 4/5 – What We Are Learning About

We are reading the story ‘Leon and the place between’. The children wrote excellent predictions using the front cover, before we read the story with excitement. The children love how spooky the wording is within the story, we are finding exciting vocabulary from this to add intonation to our writing. We can’t wait to use different writing styles following this mysterious story…

In maths we are focusing on place value. We really need to understand what every digit represents within numbers up to 10,000. This will consolidate our understanding of numbers to help us in our next maths topics.

In science our topic is ‘living things and their habitats’. We are going to develop our skills around the creation of flow charts, showing how to distinguish between different species!

Within our foundation subjects, we have lots of great topics! In history we have the Romans where we will look at what life was like in this time period. In geography we are thinking about why the North East is so special, in particular, looking at different rivers. Within RE we are finding out about the Christian faith and why the bible is special.

What an exciting term ahead!
