Y1 – Mrs Brown 23/24

Welcome to Year 1

There are 20 lovely children in our class. Mrs Brown and Miss Beadle are the teachers working in Year 1. Mr Osmand teaches the children on a Thursday afternoon.

PE

Our P.E. days are Wednesday and Friday. Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing a full P.E. kit on these days.

Reading

In Year 1, we read with the children every day. Children have a phonics book that is suited to their reading ability. Children also can choose a ‘reading for pleasure’ book to take home from our classroom library/bookshelf. Please can you ensure that children have their reading books in school every day. It would be a great help and beneficial to the children if you could read with them at home too.

At 3 o’clock every day, children take part in story time where they are read to by their class teacher before home time. It is at this time children also participate in discussions about books they have read, their favourite authors and stories they enjoy.

In Year 1, children enjoy walking to our local library once every half term where they can choose a book to keep in school. We have a class library card and children experience scanning their books in and out of the library.

Please see Year 1’s reading LTP below. It would be great if you could talk to your child about the books they have read and enjoyed learning about in school.

Spelling

Children receive new spellings to learn every Monday and are tested every Friday. Please practise these at home throughout the week.

Year 1 – What We Are Learning About

During our first week in Year 1 we enjoyed reading a book called There’s a Tiger in the Garden by Lizzy Stewart. The children produced some lovely work which is on display in our classroom. We learned all about tigers and the children created some lovely art work.

Please take a look at the Year 1 curriculum map for more detail about the topics we are covering throughout the year.
