Welcome to Year 1
Our Learning
There are 27 children in our class. We are supported in Year 1 by Miss Huntingdon. Mr Osmond teaches on a Monday afternoon and Mrs Dodds on a Friday afternoon.
PE
Our P.E. days are Monday and Friday. Please ensure that your child attends school in a full P.E. kit on these days.
Home Reading
In school children will read with an adult every day. Please make sure that children have their reading books in school every day. Children should read their books every night at home and we encourage you to sign their reading record every time they do so.
Spellings
The children will be given spellings on a Monday and we will complete a spelling test on a Friday. Even though we complete lots of spelling activities during the week, the children are still encouraged to practise their spellings when they are at home.
Times Tables
It is also very important that your child knows their times tables as they help with almost every area of maths. At home, you could focus on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s before we begin to learn the same times tables.
Our Learning
Throughout the year, the children will be enjoying a varied curriculum. They will be working on learning phonics using the Read Write Inc teaching programme and from a variety of picture books and texts to encourage writing. In Numeracy, the children will complete lots of work in topics such as place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions. They will use concrete materials to help understand difficult concepts. A variety of problem solving questions will also deepen their understanding. In the afternoon we will look at lots of different topics including the The Gunpowder Plot (Guy Fawkes), Toys through time and Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole; we will investigate local Geography and in science lessons the focus will be on Materials, Animals and then Plants. We will also be using a variety of musical instruments and lots of different materials in art and design & technology. To see a full overview of the curriculum, please click the link below.
