Welcome to Year 4!
Some of our interesting topics this year are: The Romans, Why does Italy shake and roar? and artists like Claude Monet.
Please see our curriculum map below to find out more about what we will be learning across the curriculum this year:
Home Reading
Reading is a fundamental part of your child’s learning and it will support them across all of their subjects in school.
The children are each given a reading book and they need to read for at least 15 minutes daily at home. Please can you make sure that you sign their reading record each day. As we complete daily reading groups in school, your child will still need to ensure that they bring their reading book to school every day.
Whilst hearing your child read, it is beneficial to ask them questions such as:
- What do you predict will happen next? Why?
- How do you think the character is feeling?
- Why do you think the character did that?
- Are there any words you are unsure of?
- Can you summarise what has happened so far?
The children are familiar with using the Reading Plus reading platform. They can access Reading Plus at home with their own username and password:
https://student.readingplus.com/seereader/api/sec/login
The children also have the opportunity to access Fiction Express which is an innovative book platform that connects students with professional authors and encourages reading for pleasure. To access this at home please visit:

Homework
Spelling homework will be sent home on a Friday. Your child should learn their weekly words every night in preparation for their test on the Friday. In Year 4, we will be revisiting spelling rules from Year 3, in addition to learning the Year 4 spelling rules. Alongside this, children will be given Key Stage 2 common exception words to learn. Furthermore, children will also be given homework relating to their half-termly KIRF (Key Instant Recall Facts) targets. These will also be tested on Friday.
Maths
Quick times tables recall will support your child across all of our maths topics this year. Short bursts of Times Tables Rock Stars will help your child to improve and maintain their memory of multiplication facts up to 12×12.
You can access Times Table Rock Stars from home here:
