Welcome to Year 6
Welcome to Year 6!
The final year of primary school is very special. Throughout the year, children will be working hard to ensure that they achieve their full potential in the Key Stage 2 SATs and we will be here to help and support them every step of the way. But, it’s not all about tests in Year 6!
We will be having lots of fun exploring topics such as ‘Fantastic Forests – Why are they so important?’ and ‘Who was making history in faraway places in the year 1000BC?’. We will be finding out about new topics as well as revising previous learning.
In year six, there are 34 children overall. In my class, we have 17 children and there are also 17 children with Mrs Nixon. We are very lucky to have Mrs Guy who supports in our class full time.
If you have any questions at all, please just ask!
What we are learning about
The final year in primary school is a very busy one! We will be working very hard to make sure we achieve our full potential.
Throughout the year, the children will be enjoying a varied curriculum.
The children will be working from a variety of novels and texts in English such as Letters from the Lighthouse and Holes. In maths, the children will complete lots of work in topics such as place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions. They will use concrete materials to help understand difficult concepts. A variety of problem solving questions will also deepen their understanding.
In the afternoon we will look at lots of different interesting topics. On a Tuesday, we are very lucky to have Mr Hind who teaches us music through learning to play a brass instrument. This is the third year that children have learnt how to play the cornet, trumpet or baritone. To see a full overview of the curriculum, please click the link below.
Please take a look at our Year 6 LTP Curriculum Map to view what we have been and what we will be learning about across the curriculum this year.
We have P.E on Mondays and Thursdays so please ensure that your child comes to school in their full PE kit on those days.
Our Classroom
Home Reading
The children are given a reading book and they need to read for at least 15 minutes every evening. Please can you make sure that you sign their reading record after they have read. Children have to return their book on a Friday. If your child is a confident reader, you do not need to hear them read aloud but it would be very beneficial if you talked to them about what they have read. E.g. What is the plot? Which is your favourite character? Why? What have you learnt that they didn’t know before?
Children also have the opportunity to choose a ‘reading for pleasure book’. Please see below. Can all children bring these books into school each day.
Reading for Pleasure
At Ropery Walk Primary School, we are passionate about reading and creating an environment that promotes reading. We believe that high-quality literature is key to motivating children to read and instilling in children a love of literature. All classrooms have a book area where books and information about books are displayed attractively and where browsing, choosing and reading can take place as a visible way of establishing and promoting a positive ethos for reading for pleasure. We carefully consider the range of texts made accessible to children to cover a breadth and variety of genres and formats; ensuring children can experience a full and rich range of reading. At the end of each day, children have the opportunity to enjoy listening to a story read by their class teacher.
This is the book which we are reading now.
This book is by the author, Phil Earle. We enjoy listening to this story at the end of each day. The main character, Joseph, is living with Mrs F during the war. They work in a rundown zoo and they look after a gorilla called Adonis. We are looking forward to finding out about all of their adventures in this story.
Additional Reading Platforms
In school, children have access to a program called Reading Plus. This programme develops fluency, reading speed, understanding texts and a wider vocabulary range. Children have their own usernames and passwords. To access this at home visit https://student.readingplus.com/seereader/api/sec/login
The children also have the opportunity to access Fiction Express which is an innovative book platform that connects students with professional authors. This encourages reading for pleasure through fun co-creation of stories. To access this at home visit https://en.fictionexpress.com/account/login/
Homework
Spelling homework will be given out every Friday for a spelling quiz on the following Friday. The amount of homework that your child receives will increase in Spring term but we would like them to concentrate on times tables, reading and spelling this term.
Don’t forget children can access ‘Times Tables Rock stars’ at home this encourages children to practice their tables at more. Children have their own usernames and passwords. To access this at home visit https://ttrockstars.com/login
