Welcome to Year 6
The final year of primary school is very special. Throughout the year, children will be working hard to ensure that they achieve their full potential in the Key Stage 2 SATs and we will be here to help and support them every step of the way. But, it’s not all about tests in Year 6! We will be having lots of fun exploring topics such as ‘Fantastic Forests’ and ‘Who was making history in the year 1000BC’. We will be having lots of fun exploring new topics as well as revising previous learning.
If you have any questions at all, please just ask!
There are 17 children in our class. We have P.E on Mondays and Thursdays so please ensure that your child comes to school in their full PE kit on those days.
Home Reading
The children are given a reading book and they need to read for at least 15 minutes every evening. Please can you make sure that you sign their reading record each evening. If your child is a confident reader, you do not need to hear them read aloud but it would be very beneficial if you talked to them about what they have read. E.g. What is the plot? Which is your favourite character? Why? What have you learnt that they didn’t know before?
For a couple of years, children have accessed Reading Plus. This encourages our year six children to practice scaffolded silent reading. Children have their own usernames and passwords. To access this at home visit https://student.readingplus.com/seereader/api/sec/login
The children also have the opportunity to access Fiction Express which is an innovative book platform that connects students with professional authors. This encourages reading for pleasure through fun co-creation of stories. To access this at home visit https://en.fictionexpress.com/account/login/
Reading for Pleasure
Your child has a reading for pleasure book that they should also be reading and enjoying at home!
We now have two Reading Ambassadors in our class!
Homework
Spelling homework will be given out every Friday for a spelling test the following Friday. The amount of homework that your child receives will increase in Spring term but we would like them to concentrate on times tables, reading and spelling this term.
Don’t forget children can access ‘Times Tables Rock stars’ at home – this encourages children to practice their tables more. Children have their own usernames and passwords. To access this at home visit https://ttrockstars.com/login
